2019 Extraordinary Music Workshop
We invite you to the next workshops on 22-28.07.2019 to Krakow!
2019 Extraordinary Music Workshop
The next Extraordinary Music Workshops will be held in Krakow on 22-28.07.2019. We cordially invite all existing and new participants!
The Extraordinary Music Workshops is the Foundation’s largest project for liturgical musicians and our goal is to change the presence of the liturgy in Poland. We strive to emphasize the importance of music, tradition, as well as new developmental directions in the liturgy.
This year’s Extraordinary Music Workshops have a retreat dimension and are even more focused on the practice of prayer. Therefore, different from previous years, the Gregorian chant groups will mainly focus on the preparation of the Liturgy of the Hours and selected parts of the Mass, while the evenings will be devoted to common prayer.
The workshops serve to shape new and old models in this important area of the Church. Their purpose is to professionally prepare leaders - people who will be able to take responsibility for the liturgical music performed in their communities. We also promote contemporary compositions with the highest musical value.

Please make sure to read the “Questions and Answers” tab before submitting your application.
Attention! In the application form, we choose:
A1 - Block (both or either 1 or 2) - the selection applies only to the dates of participation (block 1 - 4 days - 22-25.07.2019, block 2 - 3 days - 26-28/07/2019, both - 7 days - 22-28.07. 2019). The decision applies only to deadlines and does not relate to the level of advancement of the participant nor the level and subject matter of the classes. We invite everyone to both blocks, but realizing that a 7-day trip may not be possible for everyone, we also enable the selection of a single block.
A2 - Specialized section - one of the thematic sections in which the participants work in the afternoons. In each block you have to choose one section - it can be the same, or it can be different. This year there is no polyphonic section (polyphonic singing is the content of classes, among others in the section of Corsican polyphony and Byzantine singing). More information about the section selection below.
B - Choir level - all participants of the workshop in the morning part participate in classes in a polyphonic choir, divided into two levels of advancement (more information below).
C - Participation in individual consultations - everyone is invited to one consultation as part of the workshop fee. You can also order additional consultations on the form (the second meeting will also be possible - the third will be possible - if there are places available). The decision regarding free consultations is binding when the application form has been submitted (later you can only sign up for additional consultations).
To make the right choice of group level, choose the sentence that best describes the participant's expectations.
Classes with polyphonic singing take place until noon, are intended for all participants and are conducted on two levels of advancement. The main aim of the course is to get to know and understand the role of singing in the liturgy, broadening the knowledge of the liturgical repertoire and raising individual vocal skills.
Level I: I want to start learning from scratch. I do not have experience in polyphonic singing, that's why I want to get to know elements of music, take part in rhythmic exercises, learn the basics of proper voice emission, learn how to educate my musical hearing, and start singing simple four-voice liturgical songs. Host: Urszula Rogala, Rafał Maciejewski, Katarzyna Młynarska, Grzegorz Doniec.
Level II: I have experience of polyphonic singing in choir or school. I want to broaden my knowledge of the repertoire with new or lesser-known compositions and develop the conscious skills to work on my voice. I deal with musical notation - I care about improving the interpretation of songs under the professional eye of composers and conductors. Host: prof. Elżbieta Wtorkowska, Paweł Bębenek, Piotr Pałka, Dawid Kusz OP.
In addition to the activities with multi-voice singing, each participant enrolls in selected specialist classes. They take place from Monday to Saturday between 15.30 and 18.30, with the structure of classes and the number and length of breaks depending on the leaders of each group. You can choose from:
Group I: Liturgy of the Hours and song of readings. I want to learn the psalm tones, melodies of hymns and readings, and learn the basics of praying chant. I want to take part in the preparation of the workshop Gregorian Vigil. Host: Robert Pożarski.
Group II: Mass (fixed and variable parts). I already have experience singing chant. I actively participate in prayer with a chant during the liturgy of Holy Masses or the Liturgy of the Hours. During the Workshops, I want to improve my skills, to sing more complicated fragments of the liturgy (responsoria, antiphons, ordinarium missae, proprium missae). I would like to know and explore the differences in the performance traditions of choral singing. Host: Marcin Bornus-Szczyciński.
Conducting scholi: I want to learn the rules of running vocal ensembles, learn the basic patterns and conductor gestures, learn about exercises that help in the good conducting of the song, and practice conducting a vocal ensemble composed of participants of the classes. Host: Piotr Pałka.
Voice emission: I want to learn the principles of voice production in singing, gain or broaden knowledge about resonators, diaphragmatic breathing, learn how to sing better and how to sing a band; learn the basics of working on the voice with different methods. Host: prof. Elżbieta Wtorkowska.
Impostation: I want to learn to talk, to strongly, to enhance color, to improve the condition of my voice; learn the exercises that have my voice free and strengthen; I want to learn about the correct pronunciation; I want to take part in the preparation of the Dominican Mystery of the Passion of Christ. Note: due to the intensity of work classes will be held in two groups of 1.5 hours (without interruption). You should take free sports exercise clothes to classes. Host: Artur Zajt.
Corsican polyphony: I want to know the specifics of traditional Corsican singing; learn new songs; work under the guidance of a practitioner and composer from Corsica. Host: Jean-Étienne Langianni.
Polish folk singing: I want to broaden the repertoire in the field of folk songs (casual, sultry, Lenten, and saints); I want to learn the basics of singing with a white voice; I want to take part in the preparation of the service with folk singing. Host: Paweł Grochocki.
Byzantine singing: I want to know the specifics of singing from Eastern tradition under the supervision of a specialist and practitioner; get basic knowledge about Byzantine tones and take part in the preparation of the paraklesis to the Mother of God designed especially for WMN 2019. Lecturer: Andrij Szkrabiuk.
Individual consultation on voice emission
After the previous declaration, there is the possibility of individual consultations with the voice emission. You can sign up for more than one (within available places). The first consultations are available as part of the workshop fee (subject to registration in the application form for the workshop). Host: prof. Elżbieta Wtorkowska, Olga Trzebicka, Katarzyna Młynarska, Magdalena Szymańska, Rafał Maciejewski and others.
Each day includes classes from 8:30 to the evening concert; including group classes, Holy Mass, Morning Prayer and Vespers, catechesis and meal breaks.
Are there still spots?
Yes, if the form allows you to sign up for a section of your choice, it means there are still spaces available. Please, do not post questions about the availability of places in individual sections - when they are missing, we will immediately block the possibility of submitting applications via the form.
Will I be able to send a form now if I want to reserve a place in advance and send the transfer next month?
No, please note that the entry is only entered into the list after the payment has been received (and not when the form is submitted) - so please make your payment as soon as possible after sending your application (preferably directly or within 24 hours). Earlier submission of the form will not speed anything up, nor will it place a reservation. We also do not accept payment in installments.
Do classes from block I and II in the same section overlap in time?
No, the classes will not overlap since they are consecutive in terms of time, therefore classes in block II will be the continuation of classes from block I. The leader will work in block II over the new repertoire, so you can sign up for both blocks, but you can also choose only the first or only second.
Is it possible to change the choice of blocks or sections after submitting, but before the workshop?
No, due to the comfort of the participants and the facilitators, we will not be able to change the section once chosen. However, as long as seats are available, you can expand participation from one block to two before the start of the workshop (please contact us by e-mail), while the reduced participation fee in both blocks applies only to applications submitted immediately to both blocks.
Do the organizers provide accommodation and meals in Krakow as part of the participation fee?
Yes; through the Dominican Liturgical Center Foundation or the monastery. The Dominicans do not provide accommodation or meals, however, based on the agreement with the Student Hotel Żaczek (initially planned was Nawojka HS - which changed in July of this year) we will book accommodation for all interested parties, until the places are empty. All rooms have free internet access, in each room there are bed linens and towels. Reservation and payment can be made by completing the application form for the Workshops.
We also present to our participants a special gastronomic offer prepared by partner premises. The monastery will have a cafe with hot drinks and snacks. We provide all participants with free coffee and water for seven days of intensive work.
Can I book accommodation for my family or friends who will come to Krakow with me?
Yes, you can buy accommodation for accompanying persons who will not take part in the Workshops. For this purpose, select the appropriate number of nights when completing the application form for the Workshops or report the demand for accommodation later.
Do the organizers provide parking in Krakow?
There are no parking spaces available at the monastery. Dominicans, neither in the Foundation nor at the Student Hotel Żaczek (in which accommodation is reserved). In a large part of Krakow, there is a paid parking zone, and entry to the center (where the monastery is located) is forbidden and often controlled. Nearby paid parking meters are located, among others at pl. Wszystkich Świętych 5, ul. Westerplatte 18, pl. Na Groblach 24 (round-the-clock, 600 covered places, card payment: daily PLN 60 / week PLN 200) and next to HS Żaczkek - under the National Museum, al. Adama Mickiewicza 18 (150 covered spaces, the possibility of card payments: 24 zlotys / week 125 zlotys).
Why, despite sending a bank transfer, did I not receive an email confirmation, and my payment is not recorded on the website?
If you order a transfer from your bank, it may take several business days before it reaches our account, so please wait at least 5 working days before reporting a problem with the payment.
Why do I receive an e-mail reminder regarding the payment, even though the transfer has already been commissioned by me?
If we do complete posting and confirmation of your payment, an automatic reminder will be sent. If you are sure that the transfer has been commissioned - ignore it. Also read the answer to the previous question.
After a few days of waiting, I still have not received an email confirmation. What do I do?
Sometimes e-mail confirmations fall into the "Spam" folder (junk mail) - so check that out first. To prevent this, you can add the Foundation to contacts (address book) in your mailbox (addresses [email protected] and [email protected]).
In spite of everything, automatic e-mails are ignored - in this case it is best to check the status of the payment page of your application. In case of doubt, you can always contact us.
Can you give me the transfer details?
Yes, of course - exact data (bank account number, amount and title of payment) you will receive directly after sending the application form, we will also send it to your e-mail address. Please do not make payments to other accounts, because they will not be considered, it is also very important to keep the right payment title.
Should I register somewhere after arriving in Krakow?
Yes, registration of participants will take place in the cloisters of the monastery. Dominicans (12 Stolarska St., Krakow). Detailed information about the place and hourly interval of registration will be provided at a later date, but as in previous years, participants of one or both blocks will register on the eve of the workshops (Sunday, 21.07, 16:00 - 20:00), and II block - on Thursday (July 25, 16:00 - 20:00); we will also allow registration of persons arriving on the first day of classes.
