Mysterium fascinans 2019
Liturgical retreat Mysterium fascinans will be held this year for the twelfth time under the slogan "Become what you accepted. Mystagogy of the Eucharist and the Liturgy of the Hours. " We planned them at the weekend 6-8 September 2019 in Krakow. Registration will start on Wednesday, June 19 at 10:00 and will last until the end of August or earlier if seats sell out.
What are these retreats
The Mysterium retreat attracts about 200 people a year, who want to deepen their understanding and experience of the liturgy. During each of the previous editions, the retreat was hosted by eminent theologians and liturgists - among them Fr. prof. Cesare Giraudo, priest Dr. Jose Antonio Goñi from Pamplona, priest prof. Felix Maria Arocena Solano and priest prof. Pierangelo Muroni. The invitations were also accepted by Fr.. prof. Czesław Krakowiak, priest prof. Bogusław Migut, priest dr Maciej Zachara, MIC, dr. Mateusz Przanowski, OP, dr Tomasz Dekert and many other excellent speakers.
The retreat has been taking place since 2008 in the initiative of Krzysztof Porosła, who began organizing them as a cleric of the Krakow seminary. So far, they have taken place in retreat centers in Skomielna Czarna, Bystra, Zembrzyce and Kraków. Today, inviting us to the twelfth edition, we are convinced that they can not be held differently than in the rhythm of the celebrated liturgy.
A rich program
An important assumption of the retreat is an attempt to translate complex theology into a comprehensible and pictorial language. By choosing speakers, we are guided by the conviction that we need, above all, educators who will easily present the truths of the Catholic faith in an accessible way.
Participants of the twelfth edition will be able to listen to the retreat lessons of Father Tomasz Grabowski, OP, a long-time head of the Dominican Liturgical Center, and now the president of the Publishing House "W drodze", located in Poznań. Among this year's speakers will be Fr. Sławomir Jeziorski, priest Robert Tyrała, priest Maciej Zachar, MIC, father Dominik Jurczak OP, lecturer at the Roman Angelicum and Anselmianum, priest Krzysztof Porosło, PhD student of dogmatics in Pamplona and last year's retreat-teacher, priest Piotr Roszak.
This year, retreats return to Krakow Seminary building. As usual, we allow you to book your accommodation from Thursday, especially for those who come from afar or want to explore the city calmly before retreat - just tick the appropriate option in the application form.

For the first time in the 12-year history of Mysterium fascinans, we are pursuing one topic during two editions. Last year we started the implementation of the theme "Mystagogy of the Eucharist and Liturgy of the Hours", which - due to the number of topics to be discussed - was spread over two years (this does not mean, however, that only last year's participants can participate in this year, because knowledge of issues discussed last year is not required for a fruitful participation in the twelfth edition).
Last year, we leaned over the opening ceremonies of the Mass and the liturgy of the word. The motto that accompanied us were the words of Pope Pius X to "pray the liturgy". We were therefore asking for such an introduction (mystagogy) in liturgical celebrations, so as not to pray during the liturgy, as if we had to fight somehow in the meantime, next to the liturgical ritual, but to pray the liturgy, and thus all the prayers, songs, gestures and attitudes of the body, all senses involved in the perception of the richness of the liturgical symbols.
In the same spirit, we will be implementing the twelfth edition of the Mysterium fascinans Retreat, which, after a year's break caused by the renovation, return to the building of the Higher Theological Seminary in Krakow. From Friday to Sunday (6-8 September 2019), together with the invited guests, we will be bending over the next rites of the Holy Mass, beginning with the rites of preparing gifts for the ordinances of Communion and sending out.
In these considerations, we will be patronized by Saint. Augustine, whose words addressed in one of the sermons to neophytes, we chose as the leitmotif of this year's edition: "Become what you accept". One could immediately add: "Become Who You Receive", because the deepest meaning of the Eucharist is not only the consecration, the "effect" of which is the real presence of Christ under the Eucharistic figures, but the devotion, praise and glory to God the Father through Jesus in the Spirit Saints and our sanctification, and therefore the union with God in Christ, the conformity to God's Son by the power of Holy Communion. If the famous Polish proverb is true, that "with whom you stop, you become so", in the case of the Eucharist, it becomes even more important, because the depth of this transformation that takes place in us as a result of union with Christ in the Eucharist is incomparable any human assimilation to another human being. This theme, no doubt, will be a thread interspersed with almost all this year's papers, which will be taught by well-known lecturers to everyone: Father Dominik Jurczak, OP Maciej Zachara, MIC, priest Krzysztof Porosło and priest Piotr Roszak, last year's retreat winner.
Unlike usually the first day of the retreat will look like (Friday), because in response to the participants' requests and suggestions provided to us in the surveys, we have prepared a proposal more adapted to the level of theological knowledge of the participants of our retreats. Ks. Sławomir Jeziorski (for the first time present as a lecturer, he has been a participant until now) in his lecture he will make an elementary introduction to the Liturgy of the Hours, its history, significance and above all the way of prayer and fluent movement of the intricate structure of the breviary prayer. Then, Fr. Robert Tyrała (retreat-retreader of the 6th edition in 2013), vice-rector of the John Paul II University in Krakow, will give a talk about the evangelizing meaning of liturgical music, answering the question of how and what music in the liturgy evangelizes. At the same time, father Dominik Jurczak OP will conduct workshops for a small group of participants reported as "advanced in theology". On Sunday, as last year, there will be a discussion panel, during which invited lecturers will answer questions that will be born to participants during the first two days of the retreat.
The guide in this year's spiritual exercises will be perfectly known to us, because Fr. Tomasz Grabowski OP, a long-time president of the Dominican Liturgical Center, and now the president of the Publishing House "W drodze" in Poznań, was involved in the retreat from the very beginning. He will proclaim homilies during all liturgical celebrations and on Sunday he will invite us to a mystagogical catechesis devoted to the issue of the fruits of Holy Communion in the life of a believer.
Of course, Mysterium fascinans retreats are not only presentations and workshops, but above all, a beautiful celebration of the liturgy. As has been the case for many years, on Friday and Sunday we will celebrate the Eucharist and the Liturgy of the Hours in the form of an ordinary Roman rite, and on Saturday we will immerse ourselves in celebrations according to the older forms of the Roman (Eucharist) and Dominican (Liturgy of the Hours) rite.
We would like to cordially invite all regular visitors of Mysterium Retreat to those who have just learned about them, and invite them to their twelfth edition. It is not worth delaying the decision to submit, because - as last year showed - free places disappear in a flash. See you in September!
In this tab, we place answers to the most frequently asked organizational questions.
Are there still places?
Yes, if the form allows you to sign up, it means there are still places available. Please do not post questions about the availability of places - when they are missing, we will automatically block the possibility of submitting applications via the form. An analogous rule concerns the possibility of booking accommodation, but you can read about praking below.
Will I be able to send a form now if I want to reserve a place in advance and send the transfer next month?
No; Please note that the application is entered into the list only after the payment is booked (and not at the time of sending the form) - so please make payments as soon as possible after sending the application. Former submission of the form will not speed anything up, nor will it be a place reservation. We also do not accept payment in installments.
Does the topic / content of the retreat coincide with the previous editions?
No, each year the subject matter and, consequently, the content of the conference is different. Only the form (program of individual days) is similar, although minor modifications also take place here.
Do the organizers provide accommodation in Krakow?
Yes, if the accommodation option is selected, the participant will be prepared a place in the building of the Higher Seminary, where retreats take place or in the student hotel Żaczek, located less than 1.5 km from the retreat - depending on the option selected in the application form. It should be borne in mind that the specificity of the place determines the standard of accommodation (clerical rooms with shared bathroom on the corridor in a seminar or two-star rooms, a choice of 2- / 3-person or 1-person, all with bathrooms and free internet, in each room there are bedding and towels - in the hotel) and there is no possibility of changes in this area.
Can I park my car safely?
Yes, there is a car park for about 20 cars right under the seminar building, which will be available free of charge if there are free places - first of all, those staying in the seminary. Until now, no places have been missing and we do not anticipate this situation this year, although the order of arrival decides about the location (in the case of a lack of vacancies you must use a paid parking in nearby streets or paid parking in the center of Krakow).
There are no parking spaces available at the monastery. Dominicans, neither in the Foundation nor at the Student Hotel Żaczek (in which accommodation is reserved). In a large part of Krakow there is a paid parking zone, and entry to the strict center is forbidden and often controlled. Nearby paid car parks are located, among others at pl. Na Groblach 24 (round-the-clock, 600 covered places, card payment: daily PLN 60 / week PLN 200), pl. Wszystkich Świętych 5, ul. Westerplatte 18.
At Student Hotel Żaczek, there is no separate car park for overnight travelers - there is only a possibility of a paid parking in the surrounding streets as far as available places (city zone of paid parking P6 III - can be paid by the application or in the parking machine). Right next to HS Żaczek there is also an underground car park - under the National Museum, al. Adama Mickiewicza 18 (150 covered seats, the possibility of card payments: 24 zlotys / week 125 zlotys).
Why, despite sending a bank transfer, I did not receive an email confirmation, and my payment is not recorded on the website?
If you order a transfer from your bank, it may take several business days before it reaches our account, so please wait at least 5 working days before reporting a problem with the payment.
I receive an e-mail reminder regarding the payment, even though the transfer has already been commissioned by me. Have my money gone missing?
No. If we do not manage to post and confirm your payment, an automatic reminder will be sent. If you are sure that the transfer has been commissioned - ignore it. Also read the answer to the previous question.
After a few days of waiting, I still have not received an email confirmation. Should I worry?
No. Sometimes e-mail confirmations fall into the "Spam" folder (junk mail) - so check it out first. To prevent this, you can add the Foundation to your contacts (address book) in your inbox ([email protected] and [email protected]).
Despite everything, we know cases when our automatic emails are ignored - in this case, it is best to check the status of the payment on the page of your application. In case of doubt, you can always contact us.
Can I make a transfer to any Foundation's account or adjust the amount?
No. Please make payments for the retreat only to the bank account provided on the application page (available here - a direct link to it can also be found in the email confirming the notification) - please note that the transfer must contain the appropriate title (description) and is directed to Dotpay company, not directly to our Foundation. In case of problems with finding data for the transfer, please contact us by e-mail.
Note: do not make transfers to Dotpay bills with a changed amount - such payments will not reach us and will be automatically refunded by Dotpay. Payment must be made as a result of pressing the button on the website or exactly according to the data provided for the transfer in order to successfully reach us.
I come from outside Poland, can I apply for a retreat?
Yes of course. In the application form, please indicate your country of residence (it is about actual residence, not about origin) and enter the mobile number preceded by the plus (+) and country code (eg Germany +49, Italy +39 etc.).
Should I report in a specific place after arriving in Krakow?
Yes, welcome! Registration of participants will take place in the vestibule of the Monastery of Dominikanów - entrance from ul. Stolarska 12, marked with the "Dominican Monastery". There, you can check in on Friday from 10-16, but in the case of lodging with accommodation, remember to check in at the student hotel Żaczek first.
In case of arriving by train (Kraków Główny station) or by bus (Małopolski Dworzec Autobusowy), you should cross the entire Old Town (about 20 minutes on foot) or take a tram and get off at the intersection of św. Gertrude and Dominikańska or at the Poczta Główna stop, or take a taxi.
Can I extend my accommodation?
Yes, there is a possibility of buying accommodation from Sunday to Monday at the price provided for participants of the retreat - for this purpose, please fill in the form in a standard manner (choosing the actual day of arrival as the starting day - Thursday or Friday), and then for individual e-mail contact with the application number.
Can I get answers to other questions?
Yes - if you still have a question about the retreat, we are at your disposal at [email protected] and telephone number 12 444 12 52 (Monday-Friday, 10-16).
